Warren Buffet is one of the most influential and wealthiest persons of the modern era. He is a famous American business magnate, investor and philanthropist. He is keen on sharing his financial wisdom with everybody and has from time to time uttered very sensible and inspiring quotes. One of his famous quotes that everyone should take to heart is: “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long ago.”

I really like the aforementioned quote due to its cleverness because it’s true in both of its shallow and deeper meanings. The persons who did plant a tree long ago can sit in its shade and reap any other benefits the tree can give. In the business sense, this means that everyone should engage in worthwhile investments that have the potential to grow like stocks and bonds in big businesses, savings with large interests, properties with potential or engage in one’s own business. In time, like the proverbial tree, these investments will grow (of course with proper attention) and the investor will benefit in the financial security or proverbial shade by the time one reaches retirement age or even earlier. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long ago,” is a great generalized quote to live by and Mr. Buffet has tons more.

One of the best inspirational quotes out there belongs to the great Martin Luther, who was a central figure in the Protestant Reformation in Europe in the 16th century. The quote is as follows: “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” This quote basically means that there are things out there that are out of your control and should not even pay attention to. That those things should not affect your efforts to reach your goals and that those concerns should not stop you from reaching them. In short, it’s useless to fret over things that are out of your control and simply concentrate to whatever task is at hand. If something cannot be controlled, then the steps to reach the goal should be adjusted to accommodate the problem. This quote can also be interpreted as “I’ll finish my work no matter what.”

It’s a good quote to guide people who lack focus and dedication at work or with their own personal lives. There are so many distractions in life especially today with the internet and social media. It’s easy to get distracted or concerned about tribal wars in Africa, what wild stunt Miley Cyrus has up her sleeve or that racist tweet from some famous celebrity when there’s a project waiting to get done. It’s best to reserve those concerns when the end of the world can actually be heard from outside the door.

“Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious” by Oscar Wilde, is a quote that opened up a whole new meaning for me about patriotism. Oscar Wilde was a famous Irish poet and writer and is known for the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and the play The Importance of Being Earnest. This quote was versed by Sean Connery in the film The Rock and got me thinking about patriotism.

While the love of country is a good virtue to have, having too much of it or allowing it to be misdirected can actually warp the mind. Love of country can actually go to the level of love of person where too much love of person can drive less stable individuals into crimes of passion. Misguided patriotism can result to racism, bigotry and rage directed at the perceived national enemy. Corrupt misguided leaders push their countries to war with other states in the guise of patriotism when in actuality the reasons are less noble such as resources, strategy or personal conflict. Men are driven to hate other men in the name of patriotism and that hate is translated into rage and viciousness when brought to the battlefield. Nationalist extremists will go as far as vicious murder or even genocide in the name of patriotism.

This form of patriotism is just as apparent today as when Oscar Wilde first uttered it. When is patriotism good to have? It’s good only when the cause is genuine and based on solid facts.
